KNOW YOUR CHILD'S INTERESTS

Military spouse Aleedra Straughter recently transitioned her family to a new post – and provides a great example for how she ensured her child’s interests were honored in their new location.

“Our girls' interests have been supported at school with free after school programs, band and orchestra classes and mandatory community service commitments. We provide some guidance, but let their interests lead. The school uses technology very well to communicate about the curriculum and grades. Overall, we are enjoying our experience!”

When transitioning, we recommend having a list of your child’s extracurricular activities and interests — including sports and level of participation, volunteer commitments, and hobbies. Be aware of new activities that your child might want to participate in, as well as athletics tryout eligibility requirements — especially if transferring mid-season. This information helps to round out the picture of your child that you present as a new member of this school community.
