Military-connected children move on average 6-9 times throughout their K-12 education. When there is a lack of comparable standards across districts and states, students often enter their new school either ahead or behind of their peers. This adds additional difficulties during an already stressful time in a child's life.
Because some states continue to set low academic standards, military-connected students often move to a new state and at a new school and find themselves either far behind and struggling (see Amy’s story) or far ahead feeling as though they are retaking the year.
High standards like the Common Core can help address this problem.
